Mirro-Krome 60® Machining Guidelines

  • Note: Information provided is based on mill’s advice. In all cases, caution should be exercised when working with chrome plated and induction hardened chrome plated type materials. Use equipment of sufficient capacity that is in good condition. Utilize machine operators that are properly trained and experienced in working with these materials. Appropriate safety gear should be utilized at all times.

MACHINING

Mirro-Krome 60 has an induction hardened layer that is a minimum of .050″ deep with a minimum hardness of HRc 50. The chrome plate is a minimum of .0005″ thick with a hardness of approximately HRc 70.

Removal of the chrome plate and the induction hardened layer will necessitate the use of somewhat unique tooling. Maximum rigidity is required. Tool overhang kept to a minimum and the machine should be in good tight condition. Cutting insert should be oriented to a 45° side cutting edge angle (S.C.E.A.) to minimize the notch effect. Keep area being machined as close as possible to the chuck. Using a steadyrest is not recommended unless a live center in the tailstock is also incorporated in the setup.

Coolant – none

High Speed – 280/320 surface feet per minute (SFM)

Feed – .003-.005″ per revolution.

Carbide – Depth of cut: 1/8″

Horsepower – approximately 7

TOOLING

An abrasion resistant cutting tool should be used. Typically, hot pressed ceramics can fill this need. Cutting will generate an intense amount of heat. This is typical. Some sparking may occur. Do not apply any coolant. Do not allow the insert to dwell or rub as work hardening will occur.
